Outdoor Volunteer Morning at the Island

  • The Island, Chocorua Lake (map)

Fresh air, good company, and a chance to pitch in on the shore of a beautiful lake.

Join CLC on Thursday, April 16, from 10 AM–12 PM to help care for a place beloved by so many. The shoreline along Route 16 has been conserved by CLC. Through the support of donors and volunteers, CLC makes this conservation land accessible to the public free of charge for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and enjoying the lake ecosystem. Public areas that receive heavy recreational use need regular stewardship to ensure safe access, water quality, and a healthy ecosystem. In the spring, after winter storms damage branches and trees, and the snowmelt exposes litter, the Chocorua Lake shoreline areas can look a little worse for wear. Before the leaves come out, it’s a good time to clear up fallen branches, check on the berms & swales that help protect lake water quality, and spread wood chips to help stabilize the shore during the busy seasons of many visitors and steady foot traffic. Many hands and eyes make light work. If you’re brave (and if the ice is gone by then), you could take a polar-ish plunge after!

Meet at 10 AM at the Island public parking area on Chocorua Lake on Route 16, and we’ll go from there. Bring work gloves, and, as you are able, some combination of a rake and/or a shovel, clippers, pruners, and/or a hand saws, a trash bag, work gloves,  and a wheelbarrow if you have one; if you don't have any of these, we’ll have extra tools available. Wear sturdy close-toed shoes or boots and bring water and a snack, if you like. Please register in advance above to let us know you’ll join us—we want to be able to reach you if plans change or the weather changes plans!
