Taking a walk in the woods- even in your own back yard- could lead you to finding clues about what and who existed on this land before you. Start learning how to read the woods on this explorative walk with New England history and ecology enthusiast, Harper Walker-West.
On Tuesday, September 15, from 3–4:30 PM, join Chocorua Lake Conservancy for Can You Judge the Forest by its Cover?, an exploratory walk of the Charlotte C. Browne Woods with Harper Walker-West. During our walk, we will look for clues in the trees, rocks, and shape of the land that can tell us what happened on this land 100 years ago, or even 12,000 years ago.
At CLC’s Charlotte C. Browne Woods, Harper will point out features in the landscape that offer insight into if and when the trees were cleared, what the land may have been used for, and what natural or human-caused events transpired there. Spend time outdoors in this beautiful, late-summer season while learning about the history of this area and how to find the whispers of history in any New England forest.
Harper Walker-West, CLC’s 2026 Outreach & Access Steward through Lakes Region Conservation Corps, will lead this program. Harper holds a B.S. degree in Forestry with a specialization in forest hydrology, and spends a lot of time exploring and learning from the New England woods. Having grown up in western Massachusetts, Harper has a deep appreciation for this region and its rich history.
