We are excited to introduce the two newest members of our Board of Directors

We are pleased to announce the appointment of two new members of the CLC Board of Directors, Rick Allmendinger and Michael Rich, each of whom brings knowledge, skill, good humor and kindness to the Board.

Professor Rick Allmendinger

Professor Rick Allmendinger

You might have come to one of the talks Rick Allmendinger has given for us about what was happening around here as the glacier receded at the end of the last ice age, and what might happen next as the climate changes. Or you might have used his app! Rick Allmendinger was born and raised in New Hampshire and he and his wife Teresa (“Terry”) Jordan currently own the cabin on the Little Lake that has been in his family since 1930. He is a professor emeritus of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, former department chair, and associate dean of the College of Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He is an expert on earthquakes, the geology of the Andes Mountains where he has carried out research for nearly forty years, earth energy resources, and computer applications in earth sciences. He serves on the International Advisory Board of the Chilean Natural Hazards Research Center and is a visiting professor at the Universidad Católica del Norte in Antofagasta, Chile. The Chocorua Map iPhone app, which he wrote in 2019, is a happy combination of his interests in map-making, Chocorua geology, and computer programming. He enjoys hiking, kayaking, ice skating, cross country skiing, and photography.

Michael Rich

Michael Rich

Michael Rich is a third generation Chocoruan, having first dipped his body into our sylvan waters in his first year of life. His grandmother, Joan Watt, and his mother, Joan Watt Rich, rented a Goodwin Cottage, then later The Rafters in the 1930s. While The Admiral (grandpa) was off in the Pacific during WWII, they bought Merrybrook Farm, home of the now (in)famous Orgasmic Organic Blueberries. Michael spent every summer of his young life on that farm, swimming in The Lake daily and climbing The Mountain every summer since he was 5. He and his four siblings continue the PYO blueberry tradition started by his father. Michael, his wife Lydia, their sons, Jason and Ian, and their Chinook (“Chief Chocorua”) are now ”hill people” on Page Hill (but swim only in The Lake). In his other life, Michael is a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, known as “The Mediatrician” for his research and clinical work on the effects of screen media use on the health and development of children and adolescents.

We are glad to have them both on the Board!
