LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BASIN WITH OUR NEW APP!

iPhone and iPad owners can now experience the Chocorua Lake basin and trails with our new Chocorua Map app for iOS mobile devices. The base map is an exquisitely detailed shaded relief map with a resolution of one meter, depicting the many and varied landforms of the basin as well as stone walls and old cellar holes in the woods. When you turn on GPS, you’ll see exactly where you are relative to various features. Trails are shown, not only on CLC lands in the Basin, but also all trails approaching the summit of Mount Chocorua from the east, south, and west. Tapping on a green trail not only shows you the name and length of the trail, but also tells you how far the tapped point is from the two ends of the trail, so you can answer the age-old question: “How much farther?” Publicly-accessible lands are shown with transparent color overlays that can be tapped to learn the name of the preserve and the responsible organization. Points of interest in the basin are shown as dots; tap on one to see a description along with a figure or a diagram explaining the feature. Additionally, you can set your own points of interest (which remain private to your device) to keep a “digital diary” of your own explorations of the region.

The Chocorua Map app was written by longtime summer resident Rick Allmendinger. As a professor of geology, he realized early on the power of mobile devices to help us explore the world around us. The app is based on his LiDAR shaded relief map of the Chocorua area that, for the first time, enables earth scientists to piece together how the landforms of the basin came to be. Rick has hiked virtually every trail depicted in the app and taken new photographs and made new drawings to illustrate the points of interest.

Rick has created a detailed Chocorua Map app user manual with details about how to use the map, and an explanation of how and why the app will never track your data. You can download it here. Download the app itself from the App Store, here. Thank you, Rick!
