Bobcat vs. Loon: a glimpse at the food web in action
Chocorua Lake has been blessed to see the same nesting pair of common loons return to spend their summers here year after year. In 2026, they laid two eggs and cared for them for many weeks. In the end, neither hatched, as they were taken by a local bobcat for food. This is devestating to the loon pair, as it is far too late in the season to lay any more eggs for this year. However, the bobcat must also find ways to live and eat in her habitat, too. While many of the biggest threats to loons are caused by humans, it’s important to be reminded that food webs and other natural systems are in play, too.
